Zone VI team are Super Cup Champs

The national under-20 Zone VI Games team won the NFA/DFB Women Super Cup on Sunday at the NFA Technical Centre as preparation for the biennial ZONE VI Games gain momentum.

The under-20 Zone VI team thrashed the 21 Brigade United 8-0 in the final match to secure the NFA/DFB Super Cup.

The two sides reached the final courtesy of a narrow 1-0 victory over TISAN by United, while the Under-20 team whitewashed Challengers 12-0 in the semi-finals.

The TISAN team won the third-place playoff match 3-2 against Challengers.

Jackey Gertze who coordinated the tournament says they are impressed with the way things turned out during the four days of competition and are looking forward the next assignments of women football.

“ We had four great days of exciting , competitive football with all the ladies really playing to their maximum. It was open for all ladies to play and in the end we are very impressed with the interest from the ladies. We also saw new ones in action and that goes to show how much this game can grow in this country” says Gertze.

Gertze congratulated the winners as they now look ahead to the December 2012 ZONE VI Games in Zambia.

“ The team really played well, great performance from them and their technical team. Now the final serious business starts, preparation continues for them and when they do get to Lusaka, we expect them to do well. They are young and they have potential to do well for their country”, explains Gertze.

On Saturday’s Group-stage matches, the two finalists met and it was Zone VI 3-1 United with Amateachers beating Prisons 2-0; Okahandja Beauties 2-0 Police; TISAN 8-1 Challengers.

The tournament was also used as an opportunity to continue with NFA’s annual Talent Identification Programme.

NFA women national selected at least 35 players to increase the pool of players for the national team. A training camp for the selected players is scheduled for 18th - 28th November 2012 and will be conducted by Jacqueline Shipanga and a German Instructor.
