Stars to face Sundowns in Dr. Hage Geingob Cup

African Stars will take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the Dr. inaugural Dr. Hage Geingob Cup with Black Africa to be Tigers as the cup takes place on Africa Day, 25 May at the Independence Stadium in Windhoek.

This is according to the votes cast by Namibians to determine which Namibia Premier league clubs will feature in the prestigious competition which is in honour of Namibia’s Premier Dr. Hage Geingob.

African Stars got the most votes of exactly 7061 and will take on South Africa league champions Sundowns in the main match on Sunday at 16h00, while before that Black Africa with 3459 votes will face rivals Tigers (3166 votes) at 14h00. The extravaganza will start at 10h00 as the gates open to the public with the first match between the Prime Minister’s Invitational vs Diplomats kicking off at 11h00.

Announcing the results at the media briefing held on Wednesday morning at Football House, Barry Rukoro, NFA Secretary General also revealed what the local participating teams will get for their involvement in honour of Namibia’s first and current Premier.

“African Stars will receive N$ 150 000 for playing against Sundowns and for BA and Tigers ach will receive N$ 100 000, which is something worth mentioning indeed. It is all in honour of the son of the soil and his contribution to Namibia and particularly to football and we are all looking forward to it”.

Rukoro sentiments were echoed by MTC’s Tim Ekandjo and Namibia Breweries Ian Stevenson.

Ekandjo said, despite the disappointing number of votes, the organisers were confident all participants will cherish the occasion.

“It will be a big day and for the three NPL clubs, it will be an honour for them to play on Sunday for honour Dr. Geingob. The Cup has the blessing of the NPL and I have no doubt the mere participation on Sunday will go a long way in making sure they become part of history as well”, Ekandjo said in response to whether the hosting of the cup on Sunday will take its Stoll on the players of the local clubs.

Entrance tickets for the day are N$ 20 in advance at Computicket and Football House and will N$ 40 at the gates. The first 3 000 people are due to receive Dr. Hage Geingob Cup memorabilia, which will include t-shirts and caps.
