The defending champions Otjozondjupa Region will kick off the defence of the Namibian Newspaper Cup during Easter Weekend at Katima Mulilo against arch rivals Khomas, Kunene and Kavango West Regions and the host region Zambezi will play Erongo, Omusati and Omaheke Regions in group B during the 2018 edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup, supported by Nedbank.

The 2018 Namibian Newspaper Cup was launched today at Mareua Mall, Rooftop Restaurant in the capital to confirm the annual boys’ under-20 regional football four- day spectacle event to be played in the Zambezi Region for the very first time.

Otjozondjupa won the last year edition at Swakopmund defeating the mighty Erongo in the final 2-1 and start their defence in earnest in group A together with rivals Kunene, Khomas and Kavango East.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director of Nedbank, Genort De Klerk was exciting and looking forward to the tournament.

“There are not many events in our country that give me quite the sense of joy like the Namibian Newspaper Cup does, with this being the third year of NEDBANK Namibia involvement this sense of achievement will be more evident; it is after all a tournament that celebrates achievements where the exuberates of youthful talent finds its finest expression. “he said.

Zambezi Regional Governor, Lawrence Sampofu said that the town will be packed to capacity as the town is expecting visitors from neighbouring countries, Angola, Zamibia and Zimbabwe.

“We came here in 2016 for biding and it was very difficult, we put in all our resources but we lost to Erongo. The only weakness we had as a region was that the stadiums were not equipped with flood lights. We are honoured as a region to have all this sponsors and their millions that are coming into the Zambezi Region.

The benefits that the region will have are beyond us; our hostels are being painted and mattresses are being given to the hostel,” Sampofu said.

He thanked the Namibian Newspaper Cup for all the contributions they are making to develop youth sports in the country.

The 2018 edition of the Namibian Newspaper Cup for the first time will also bring together the best of U/20 netball players from all regions of the country.

The Groups for both football and netball are as follows:

Group A: Kunene, Khomas, Otjozondjupa and Kavango West
Group B: Zambezi, Erongo, Omaheke and Omusati Region
Group C: Oshikoto, Oshana and Hardap
Group D: Ohangwena, Kavango East and //Karas Region
