The Namibia Football Association (NFA) and Skorpion Zinc Vedanta signed a sponsorship deal that will see the return of the NFA Women Super League that will be known as the Skorpion Zinc NFA Women Super League.

The two parties announced the agreement worth N$ 750 000 for undecided number of years earlier today at the Girls Centre at Football House in Katutura, marking the return of domestic women football in the country.

Skorpion Zinc Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Manager Nora Ndopu said her company strongly believes in women empowerment and their sport support to the most accessible sport in the country, football, was a clear illustration of helping develop the Girl-Child.

“At Vedanta, we believe in women empowerment. Not only in ensuring that we give women opportunities in mining but also ensure we empower them in the communities and in sport. We believe that it is very important to create opportunities for our Namibia women not only in entrepreneurship projects but as well as in sports initiatives especially soccer that is stereotyped to men” , Ndopu said.

She also added that with this injection of funding into Women’s Super League, Skorpion Zinc hopes the funding will go a long way to provide more participation opportunities and ensure that systems are in place to encourage and develop talented female soccer players who can excel on the world stage. Not only female soccer players but coaches and officials as well.

During her keynote address, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service Emma Kantema-Gaomas was filled with joy while she highlighted the importance of the sponsorship.

“The Skorpion Zinc NFA Women Super League presents women and girls in the country with a platform to showcase their talent and skills at the highest level in this country hence making them competitive to take on international games elsewhere in the world.” Said the PS.

Kantema added that “women in sport defy the misperception that they are weak or incapable. Every time they clear hurdle or kick a ball, demonstrating not only physical strength but also leadership and strategic thinking, they take a step towards gender equality”.

An almost teary Jaqui Shipanga ,General Manager of Women Football said that they couldn’t thank Skorpion Zinc enough for helping develop the Girl Child and investing their money in the empowerment of women in the country.

“When a woman is in power, she empowers others and that is what Ms Deshnee Naidoo has done, she might not understand the magnitude of this sponsorship but we do, every girl who kicks a ball in this country does. And we can never thank you enough but we promise to uphold and protect the Skorpion Zinc brand, we promise to be better, to do better, be different and make sure that Skorpion Zinc won’t hesitate to increase the number of sponsorship years” said the former Brave Gladiators Head Coach Shipanga.
