Girls Collapse in Battle to top Group – 06/05/2008
The Namibian Women National Team that has been doing so well since the start of the COSAFA Women Championship in Angola has suddenly collapsed at the hands of the host in their last group match.
Namibia was beaten by three goals to nil with all the goals coming in the second half of a very competitive match attended by a crowd of more than eight thousand fans. Angolan captain, Jacinta Ramos, was responsible for most of the damage as she scored two goals the first a minute after halftime and another in the seventy fourth minute while Angrecia Amba came off the bench to scored the third a minute from the end.
Before the Angolans scored their match winning goals Namibia could have scored and put the match to rest in the first half. Juliana Skrywer was the first culprit when she wasted what was a clear-cut goal as she missed from less than two meters. A host of other golden opportunities followed and was however missed by the Namibians.
Speaking to nfa.org, Jacky Gertse, Head of Mission of the Namibian team stated that the team is disappointed with the result and know that they could have done so much better had they taken their chances during the match. `´ But this match is now in the past and we need to look up and work on the girls to be ready for the much more important semi-final match against South Africa`` said Jacky.
`´For the match against South Africa the girls do not need too much motivation as this is the kind of match every player want to be part of. We will again give our best`´ said Jacky.
