A re-draw of the COSAFA U/17 Competition took place at Soccer House in Windhoek today. The re-draw of the competition became necessary as a result of the withdrawal of Mozambique and Madagascar after the original draw was already conducted on the 29 September earlier this year. The draw which took place in the presence of the COSAFA Secretary General, Mr. Ashford Mamelodi, was attended by a number of high profile officials from the sporting fraternity including the President of the Namibia Olympic Committee, Madam Agnes Tjongarero. A number of the coaches of the Namibia Premier League were also present.
In his statement to the media Mr. Mamelodi thanked the Government of the Republic of Namibia, though its Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture for the support it has rendered to NFA to make the competition a reality. “Without the Government being able to assist with the transportation of the teams locally this event will not have been a reality” Mr. Mamelodi said. Mr. Mamelodi also thanked Supersport International for their N$ 500 000 and CAF for the N$ 165 000 contribution to make the competition a success.
Namibia is drawn in Group C with Angola, Zimbabwe and Swaziland and South Africa will play Lesotho and Mauritius in Group A while Zambia will play Malawi and Botswana in Group B. The three winners and the best runners-up will qualify for the semifinals of the competition.
